Carrying a Gun

Oklahoma is known as a pro-gun state, and residents who are properly licensed are allowed to carry handguns either concealed or unconcealed (also referred to as “open carry”). There are also situations in which you do not need a license to carry a firearm. However, there are penalties for unlicensed carrying of a firearm and for carrying into restricted places.

When Do I Need a License to Carry?

In order to carry a handgun—whether concealed or unconcealed—you must apply for a handgun license from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). This license will allow you to carry a handgun that is no more than 16 inches in length and chambered in .45 caliber or smaller.

Legal Unlicensed Carry

You do not need a license to openly carry shotguns, rifles or handguns under certain conditions, such as:

• Hunting
• Participating in a hunter or firearm safety course
• Skeet, trap and other sport shooting events
• Carrying for self-defense purposes on property that you own, lease or rent

Exceptions to the Handgun License

Even if you are licensed to carry a handgun, Oklahoma law prohibits carrying in certain places, including:

• Government buildings
• Public and private elementary and secondary schools
• Private businesses or organizations that prohibit firearms
• Prisons, jails and detention facilities
• Bars and other drinking establishments
• Any place of meeting of elected officials, school board members or legislators

Penalties for Unlawful Carry

Carrying a firearm into any place that is prohibited by law is considered a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $250.
